Stacey Brown has a Ph.D. in Sociology. In Brown’s service-learning course students are given the opportunity to offer their time and talents to community residents, but just as importantly, the community itself positively influences and shapes the students. “Students become better critical thinkers, develop valuable skills and understand more fully the context of the community and how it impacts health. Service-learning curriculum is an integral part of preparing excellent future physicians” (Brown, 2012).
