Nancy Parent

nancyDr. Nancy Parent is an instructor of Anthropology and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the UCONN Avery Point campus. She has integrated a service-learning pedagogy into her fall 2013 course, “Feminisms and the Arts” (WGSS 1104). Dr. Parent and her students partnered with the Regional Multicultural Magnet School in New London, CT to create a three-dimensional art installation based on Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party Curriculum Project. Working in groups of two, fourth graders produced a one-page biography of the important woman in history and a three-dimensional place-setting honoring that individual. At the completion of this project, a total of 40 important women in American history were symbolically represented in an art installation in the school’s gymnasium. In December, seventy-five fourth graders, their teachers, and UCONN students traveled to the Brooklyn Museum to experience Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party in person. The children’s art work has since been displayed at exhibitions in the region, including Hygienic Art, Inc. and the Mystic Arts Center.
